The Budget That Survives Real Life
Detailed budgets break in week two. Here's a simpler structure that holds.

Why line-item budgets fail
Twenty-eight categories require perfect prediction of an unpredictable month. One dentist appointment breaks the model, and once the model is broken people stop looking at it entirely.
A budget's job is not accuracy. It is making the important decisions automatic.
Three buckets
Fixed costs, savings, and spending. Set fixed costs aside on payday, move savings automatically the same day, and let everything left be genuinely free to spend.
You only need to watch one number — what remains in the spending account — which is a question you can answer in five seconds.
Handle the irregular stuff
Insurance, car repairs, gifts, and travel wreck monthly budgets because they are annual costs pretending to be surprises. Total them, divide by twelve, and move that amount into a separate account each month.
Once irregular costs are funded in advance, most 'budget failures' stop happening.
