Negotiating Your Salary Without the Sweat

Negotiation is a research exercise with a conversation at the end.

Do the research first

Walk in knowing the market range for your role, level, and city, from salary surveys and people willing to tell you. A single number — the bottom of the band you would accept — turns a negotiation into a comparison.

Your current salary is one data point about the past, not a ceiling. Anchoring on it is the most common and most expensive mistake in the process.

Anchor on the role, not your bills

The case for a number is what the role is worth: your track record, the scope you will carry, and the market rate. Your rent and your mortgage are real, but they persuade nobody who controls the budget.

Ask for a range with your preferred number first, then stop talking. Silence after an offer is the cheapest leverage you will ever have.

Negotiate the whole package

If the salary is fixed, the package is not: start date, bonus structure, title, training budget, leave, and review timing all have value and all move more easily than base pay.

Get the final agreement in writing before you resign anywhere. Enthusiasm is not a contract.
