Keep travel under three hours

Any longer and the journey eats the trip. Three hours by train or car puts most people within reach of coast, hills, or a different city entirely.

Leave Friday evening, return Sunday afternoon. The buffer day at home matters more than an extra half-day away.

Plan exactly two things

One meal booked, one activity chosen. Everything else stays open. Over-planned weekends feel like work with better scenery.

Pick somewhere walkable so you never negotiate transport once you arrive.

Why short trips work

Research on holidays consistently finds the biggest wellbeing boost comes early in a trip and from the anticipation beforehand. Several short breaks outperform one long one.

Book the next one before the current one ends. The looking forward is half the benefit.
