How to Travel Without Wrecking Your Routine

Keeping sleep, movement, and food steady on the road.

Anchor the sleep, not the schedule

Shift to the destination's clock immediately: daylight in the morning, no long naps, meals at local times. One disciplined first day prevents four disoriented ones.

Pack an eye mask and earplugs. Unfamiliar rooms cost most people an hour of sleep a night.

Move by walking

Skip the hotel gym and choose accommodation you can walk from. Fifteen thoussteps of exploring covers movement without stealing holiday time.

If you train seriously, plan two short sessions rather than five, and accept maintenance instead of progress.

Eat well most of the time

One considered meal a day — fruit at breakfast, vegetables at lunch — leaves the rest of the trip free for whatever the place is famous for.

Carry water and a snack. Most travel irritability is dehydration and low blood sugar wearing a costume.
